Submit a building notice

You can submit a building notice for internal alterations, especially if they are being carried out by experienced designers and builders.

A building notice is more suitable for minor works including:

  • internal alterations, for example creating a door opening

What happens after you submit a building notice

Your building notice is valid for 3 years from the date that we tell you that we tell you that your notice is valid.

Once you have submitted your building notice, you need to keep us informed when you start work and as you progress so that we can check your work complies with the Building Regulations and provide a Completion Certificate.

Fees

The fee you need to pay will depend on the type of project that you need us to regularise. You will pay your fee online when you apply.

Creation or a conversion of a new dwelling

The fee you pay depends on how many new dwellings are involved in the project.

If there are more than 10 dwellings or if any of the dwellings in your project have a floor area of more than 300m2, we will determine a fee based on your individual project.

If you plan to have any electrical work carried out by a person who is not a Part P approved electrician, you will need to pay an additional charge of £212.

Domestic extensions to a single domestic building

If you plan to have any electrical work carried out by a person who is not a Part P approved electrician, you will need to pay an additional charge of £212.

We may also request an additional fee if your structural calculations have been produced by someone who is not suitably qualified.

Replacing windows and doors

You do not need to pay a fee to replace a window or door if the work is being carried out by someone who is approved by FENSA or CERTASS.
