Public realm improvements

Townscape Heritage Project funding includes the redevelopment of Tennant Square to create a more open and inviting public space. The scheme is an extension to improvements previously made to Stockton High Street.

The improvements will create a more open appearance by removing the existing boundary wall, railings, paving and soft landscape to create a high quality, attractive, safe and social space in the square.

It also includes the improvement of the historic environment with footpaths at the northern end of the High Street, along Norton Road and King Street.

The high-quality materials continue the materials used in Stockton High Street.

Work is nearing completion and fencing has been removed for the public to enjoy the heritage interpretation in this space.

Heritage interpretation

The Congregational Church stood on this site from 1845 until it was demolished in the mid 1970s. The outline of the building will be marked on the square's new design.
