"There are big savings to be made!": Residents urged to sign up to energy switching scheme

Residents across the Stockton-on-Tees Borough can sign up to a free scheme to save money on their energy bills.

It's all thanks to Stockton-on-Tees Borough Council's 'Big Community Switch', which has re-launched today (August 3).

The scheme, run in partnership with iChoosr, is free to use and there is no obligation to switch your provider.

Here's all you need to know.

What is the Big Community Switch?

The Big Community Switch is a safe and simple way to save money on your energy bills.

Companies compete to become the energy supplier for those who sign-up for the switch.

Registrations are also available over the phone by calling 0800 048 8439.

When is the deadline to register?

You have from today (August 3) until Tuesday, November 22 2021 to register.

Residents outside of the Borough can also register, but must do so before midnight on Monday, October 11.

What happens once I have registered?

A variety of energy companies will compete to become the energy supplier for the customers that sign up for the switch.

This takes place on Tuesday, October 12 2021.

The more customers that are signed up and registered the more competitive the deal is likely to be.

If registered, you'll received a personal offer highlighting how much you could save on your energy bill.

This offer will come any time between Monday, October 25 to Tuesday, November 23.

You then need to follow online instructions to complete the switch.

What do Councillors think?

Councillor Mike Smith, Stockton-on-Tees Borough Council's Cabinet Member for Environment and Transport, said: "The Big Community Switch in 2020 saw an average yearly saving of £165 for residents who took part, which goes to show what a big difference it can make.

"With no cost or obligation it's an absolutely no lose scenario and I'd encourage everyone to take part.

"If you're not happy with your energy bills then this scheme could be a real game-changer for you.
