Housing Benefit if you need to leave your home
We may still be able to provide Housing Benefit if you need to leave your home.
If you need to leave your home and pay rent on a second home, visit our Housing Benefit for 2 homes page.
Housing Benefit for your notice period
We may pay benefit for a period of notice even if you have not moved to a new home.
If your responsibility to pay rent on your old home could not have been avoided and you gave notice as soon as you were aware that you would not return, we may pay your Housing Benefit for up to 4 weeks.
Examples of when we might pay are:
- you have been admitted temporarily into a nursing or residential home and you will stay there permanently
- you have been admitted unexpectedly to hospital on a permanent basis
- you have been sentenced to a custodial term of more than 13 weeks
