Norton Duck Pond reopens following programme of repairs as part of Council's Town Centres Investment

Norton duck pond has reopened to the public after undergoing a programme of improvements to enhance the area as a welcoming destination for residents and visitors to enjoy.

The programme of improvements to the much-loved duck pond include works to the perimeter path, steps and railings as well as surface improvements including new seating and feature planters to the plaza corner.

Among the new improvements are:

•        new paving and granite blocks to the pond path and plaza area
•        renewed flexible paving surfaces that improve accessibility
•        11 new benches and seating
•        new planters with seasonal plants
•        new steps and handrails

This phase of works that have been undertaken by the Council complement the installation of a new fountain, which was completed last year, following feedback from the public on the proposed design.

Opportunities to provide further additional seating and new bins are also being considered to further enhance the area.

The completed improvements are part of the Council's Town Centres Investment Programme to transform its six town centres to encourage new uses and to continue to make them a place to live, visit and invest in.

Councillor Nigel Cooke, Cabinet Member for Regeneration and Housing at Stockton-on-Tees Borough Council, said: "It's great to see Norton duck pond reopened with some wonderful new additions.

"Everyone can agree that the installation of the fountain was a great positive and I am sure that this package of enhancements will complement that and only build on making Norton a welcome and attractive destination.

"It's fantastic that people want to be a part of Norton and its success but with that comes improvements that need to be made to ensure residents and visitors have the best experience there.

"I'm sure everyone is looking forward to enjoying the peaceful and quaint surroundings of the duck pond once again."

Procurement is also underway to appoint a contractor to complete the public realm improvement works at the southern end of the High Street, which will be announced in early 2023.
