Interested in fostering? New support hub for carers is launched

A new hub to recruit and support foster carers in Stockton-on-Tees and the wider region has launched in the North East.

Foster with North East is a new partnership between 12 local authorities which aims to recruit, encourage and support prospective foster families.

Led by Together for Children (the children's services partner of Sunderland City Council) and supported by the Department for Education, the hub is the first point of contact for those interested in fostering, helping them to make an informed choice and guide them through the application process.

Councillor Lisa Evans, Stockton-on-Tees Borough Council's Cabinet Member for children and Young People, said: "Fostering is a wonderful way to support some of the most vulnerable and disadvantaged children and young people. We urgently need more people to consider fostering - but we also understand some people may think they are unsuitable or need additional support - and that's where Foster with North East can help.

"We would love to hear from prospective foster carers from all backgrounds and walks of life, so if you can offer a child a safe and stable family environment I would urge you to talk to us about fostering."

Stockton couple Sarah and Chris were able to give a child a loving home. Speaking of her experiences, Sarah said: "I had a history of depression, which is common after struggling to conceive or working through infertility, and that is something that was asked about in the application process. I was devastated to think it would stop us from fostering, but that's absolutely not the case. The social workers were just ensuring I was supported and paying attention to my mental health."

Jill Colbert OBE, Chair of the Foster with North East Project Implementation Board, added: "For the first time, anyone considering fostering in the North East will benefit from a united support hub for prospective foster carers, with help available every step of the way."
