Stockton-on-Tees landmarks will be bathed in red on Friday (October 20) in support of the Show Racism the Red Card campaign.

The Newport Bridge and Stockton Town Centre and Riverside will be lit red as the town's event lighting changes colour in support of the campaign.

Councillors and council staff are also taking a united stance against racism for the annual 'Wear Red Day' with a series of fundraising activities being held at Durham University Queens campus throughout the day, including a five-a-side football tournament and a 2K fun relay.

Joining in the fun on the day will be former professional footballer and former Boro youth team coach Steve Howey.

Show Racism the Red Card is the UK's leading anti-racism educational charity,  utilising the high-profile status of football and football players with the purpose of tackling racism in society.

Councillor Norma Stephenson, Stockton-on-Tees Borough Council's Cabinet Member for Access, Communities and Community Safety, said: "We're always very keen to support the 'Wear Red Day' at the Council and the message is clear that any form of racism will not be tolerated in our Borough and beyond.

"Throughout the day on Friday we're hosting a range of sporting events at Durham University Queens campus, and the aim is to have fun, raise money for this fantastic cause and promote the message that racism has no place in the world.

"It's going to be a great day and we can all show our support across the Borough by wearing red. I'd also encourage anyone who feels able to donate to the campaign to do so because it does a great job tackling discrimination up and down the country."

To make a £1 donation to Show Racism the Red Card, text 'RED' to 70470. Text 'RED5' to give £5, 'RED10' to give £10, or 'RED20' to give £20.

Texts cost the donation amount plus the standard message rate.
