Tributes have been paid to former councillor and Mayor of Stockton-on-Tees, Winifred Hodgson, who has died aged 96.

Winifred served for 27 years in local government after being elected to represent the Roseworth ward in 1976. Her husband Brian served alongside her for 19 of those years.

She served as Mayor in 1988/89 and also sat on numerous council committees, including as Chair of Housing for seven years, and also on the Cabinet.

She retired as a councillor in 2003 and that year was awarded an MBE in the New Year's Honours for her outstanding contribution to housing and regeneration. Winifred was awarded Honorary Alderman status in 2004.

Councillor Bob Cook, the leader of Stockton-on-Tees Borough Council, said: "Win was passionate about the Borough and worked tirelessly for the people who live here.

"She was well known and loved in the Roseworth ward, and an excellent ambassador for the Council - especially in her roles as Civic Mayor and representing the Council on many external organisations. Conferring the title of Honorary Alderman was a fitting tribute for her huge contribution to our community.

"Our condolences go out to her family at this very sad time."

A minutes silence was observed out of respect at the Council's Annual General Meeting yesterday (May 24).
