Letters will be dropping in each home across Stockton-on-Tees to help ensure residents don't lose their right to vote.

All local authorities keep an electoral roll and update it annually through a canvass of all residential properties.

This year's canvass letters will be arriving between Thursday July 30 and Wednesday August 5.

Anyone registered to vote at an address should check their details and let the Council know about any changes.

If someone new has moved in to a property or someone has turned 16, they will need to apply to go on to the Electoral Register.

Councillor Bob Cook, Leader of Stockton-on-Tees Borough Council, said: "As always, it is vital that everyone entitled to vote is on the Electoral Register and can have their say in future elections.

"It is law that every individual has to provide the information we request, so please get it sent back as soon as you can.

 "Elections for the Tees Valley Mayor and the Cleveland Police and Crime Commissioners will be held next May and we are planning these elections taking account of current public health guidelines, including the continued importance of social distancing.

"Anyone on the Electoral Register can apply to vote by post and so we are taking the opportunity to inform all residents not signed up already.

"If anyone would like to vote by post, I would encourage you all to complete an application well in advance of next year's elections."

A new electoral register will be published on December 1 2020 using information from this year's canvass.
