Vision for adult social care to be considered by councillors
A new social care strategy aimed at ensuring adults in Stockton-on-Tees are supported to live as independently as possible will be considered by councillors this week.
Stockton-on-Tees Borough Council's Adult Social Care Strategy 2021 - 2025 sets out four key priorities for adult social care in the Borough.
The priorities - maximising people's independence, ensuring people get the right support at the right time, developing and supporting care staff, and working with, and within, communities - will be delivered through an annual action plan.
Councillor Ann McCoy, the Council's Cabinet Member for Adult Social Care, said: "Providing quality adult social care services is a huge priority for us and this strategy is one of the key documents that underpins our overall Council Plan.
"We provide adult social care support to thousands of people every year. We support some people for their whole lives, while others receive support for a short period of time, and the kind of support we provide can vary greatly.
"Each year we provide long-term support to more than 500 adults with a learning disability, more than 1,500 adults with a physical disability, and more than 170 adults with a mental health illness.
"We support more than 2,600 older people and 800 carers each year, and provide short-term care and support to over 5,000 people who need reablement or occupational therapy support after spending some time in hospital or residential care, or in cases where their illness has worsened.
"This strategy is about making sure that support is the best that it can be. It also takes into account the devastating impact of the coronavirus pandemic by looking at what has worked well and what needs to change due to its longer-term effects.
"Our adult social care staff and providers should be very proud of their amazing response to the pandemic - it's been a phenomenal effort and this strategy will ensure we continue to support them and help build on all they've achieved.
"It also comes after we moved to take back control of two services that support vulnerable adults earlier this year."
The Adult Social Care Strategy 2021 - 2025 will be considered by members of the Council's Cabinet when they meet on Thursday (October 14).
