We've put together a handy guide to take some of the stress out of the process if it's time for you to arrange your child's admission to a secondary school.

How do I know if it's the right time to apply for my child?

If your child was born between 1 September 2010 and 31 August 2011, they are due to start secondary school in September 2022.

Letters are being sent shortly to parents and carers of children in Year 6 which sets out the application process.

How do I apply?

The online application link at School admissions (opens new window) will open on Monday 13 September 2021.

Call 01642 526605 to request a paper copy or download one from the web page when available.

When is the deadline?

Applications will close on Sunday 31 October 2021. Any late applications will only be considered after those made on time have been processed.

How many schools can I apply for?

Four. In order to have the best chance of securing a place at a local secondary school, parents and carers are encouraged to nominate four preferred schools.

When will I find out the outcome of my child's application?

On Tuesday 1 March 2022, a letter will be sent to parents and carers who submitted a paper application form that informs them of the school they have been offered for their child.

On the same day those who applied online and opted to receive the outcome via email will be informed by email only.

There are options available to you if you are refused a place at your preferred school(s). Admission appeal hearings will take place in May and June 2022.

What do councillors say about the application process?

Councillor Lisa Evans, Stockton-on-Tees Borough Council's Cabinet Member for Children and Young People, said: "The transition from primary to secondary school is a really important moment in a young person's education journey and our officers are on hand to help make it a smooth process.

"The best thing you can do for your child, and your own peace of mind, is to do some research by looking at school websites and their prospectus. Schools may also offer an open evening so it's worth getting in touch with them directly to find out more.

"Please also consider how your child will get to school and have a read through our school transport policy.

"We receive thousands of applications each year for secondary school admissions and it is a tight window, so I'd urge parents and carers to submit their application as early as they can."
