Register a birth
There is no charge for registering a birth. You should register the birth of your baby within 42 days of their birth.
How do I register a birth?

What information will I need for my appointment?
To help ensure the information we record is accurate, bring supporting documentation with you such as a passport, driving license, utility bill, birth and marriage certificates. Do not worry if any of these documents are not available as the registrar can still register the birth.

Where can I register a birth?
A birth must be registered in the district in which it occurred. For example, a baby born at the University Hospital of North Tees must be registered in Stockton-on-Tees.

Register a birth by declaration
If you don't live in the area that your baby was born in you can attend any Register Office in England and Wales to make a 'Birth Declaration'.
You will need to provide the information necessary to register the birth. The Registrar will then post the declaration to the Register Office in the area your baby was born in and they will forward your baby's documents to you through the post.
Re-registering a child's birth
Re-registering a child's birth means making a new record in the birth register.
It is a requirement by law to re-register your child's birth if the child's natural parents marry each other after the original birth registration.
There is no fee for re-registration.
