Mandale Bridge set to reopen

Throughout July and August Stockton-on-Tees Borough Council has been carrying out a range of repairs and maintenance on the top side of bridge and has completed the work two weeks early.

Work planned for the underside of the bridge is set to continue but will be carried out overnight during weekends through to February 2022 to minimise disruption to residents and businesses.

When will the temporary road closure end?

From Sunday, August 22 Mandale Road and the access road to Thornaby Station will reopen to all traffic.

Why are you repairing the bridge?

Mandale Road bridge is a well-used route into Stockton town centre which carries a significant amount of traffic.

The bridge, which has been in use for over 40 years, now requires important repairs and maintenance to protect a vital crossing point and prolong its life.

The works should prolong the life of the bridge for another 20 to 25 years.

Are any more roadworks planned?

Some temporary lane closures will be needed next month to allow the Council to return the road network back to its original layout. These works are currently programmed to take place from Monday, September 6 to Sunday 26 September.

Councillor Mike Smith, the Council's Cabinet Member for Environment and Transport, said: "The repairs and maintenance to the top side of the bridge are now complete and the temporary road closure will be lifted this weekend.

"Not only is this great news for residents and local businesses but it also marks the end of the first phase of essential repairs to strengthen the bridge and protect it for the future. We thank everyone so far for their patience."
