Balfour Beatty to begin next phase of Elton Interchange roadworks alongside new housing development
Balfour Beatty will begin the next stage of major roadworks at the A66 Elton Interchange later this month.
The project is being funded by Homes England and housing developers Taylor Wimpey and Persimmon. It comes as the developers work to build approximately 969 houses on a site to the east of Yarm Back Lane.
Previous roundabouts at the site have been removed and the work will see a new traffic-signalled interchange constructed on the bridge above the A66.
Sections of Yarm Back Lane close to Elton Interchange are also being widened and Darlington Road re-aligned.
The A66 eastbound slip-road will be lengthened and widened as part of the works.
What is happening next and when does it begin?
The project is being completed in six phases and the next phase of roadworks is due to begin on Saturday, February 18.
This will include the re-alignment of kerbs, plus installation of street lighting and traffic signals.
In preparation for the next phase of works, there will be a temporary roundabout at the Yarm Back Lane and Darlington Road junction from Tuesday, February 14 until Friday, February 17.
Overnight road closures will also be in place on Yarm Back Lane from Tuesday, February 14 until Friday, February 17.
Will traffic management will be in place?
Yes, there will be a range of traffic management in place during the next phase of works.
Lane restrictions and temporary traffic signals will be used.
There will be no right turn available from Durham Lane onto the A66 eastbound slip road towards Middlesbrough (for approximately 18 weeks) and a signed diversion will be in place via A66 westbound to Long Newton to regain access onto the A66 eastbound.
Pedestrian and cycle access will be maintained.
When will the works be completed?
The works are due to be fully completed in winter 2023.
