Harewood Pleasure Gardens
A small area of woodland, adjacent to the Old River Tees in Thornaby.
The land was given to the town of Thornaby by Lord Harewood in 1906 and the 'pleasure gardens' were officially opened in 1909. Judging by the photographs taken at the time it soon became a popular place for families to walk and relax outdoors.
At one time the main River Tees ran close by, before work was done to remove the big meanders and straighten the river. The river now by-passes this area a long way to the north near Portrack, but the 'Old River Tees' can still be seen; now just a stream running between the Pleasure Gardens and the nearby golf course.
A war memorial constructed of Portland stone stands near the main entrance on Acklam Road.
